Background of the programme
This programme covers various branches of humanities such as Religion & Theology, History & Archaeology, Philosophy & Ethics, and Islamic Studies. The research field considers the context of Malaysia, the strengthening of the Malay language and Islam by integrating naqli and aqli knowledge, which forms the foundation of USIM's vision, mission, and goals. The offering of cross-field programme can produce graduates skilled in more than one field.
Objectives of the programme
The Doctor of Philosophy in Humanities programme is designed to achieve the following objectives:
- To produce postgraduates who study in depth the field of Humanities such as Religion & Theology, History & Archaeology, Philosophy & Ethics, and Islamic Studies;
- To produce matured postgraduates in Humanities who realizes the integration of naqli and aqli knowledge in a comprehensive and systematic manner through research at the PhD level as a platform for knowledge integration at USIM; and
- To produce human resource who can perform given tasks and meet the high demand from the public and private sectors for professional human resources in various fields of Humanities.

- A master’s degree in the field or related fields accepted by the Senate; or
- Other qualifications equivalent to a master’s degree recognised by the Government of Malaysia.
- Candidates without a related qualification in the field/s or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the Senate/University.
- A Bachelor’s degree with the following conditions:
- a bachelor's degree in the field or related fields with first-class (CGPA of 3.67 or higher) or its equivalent from an academic or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme;
- undergo internal assessment; and
- any other requirements of the Senate.
- Bachelor’s degree candidates who are registered for master’s degree programmes may apply to convert to the doctoral degree programmes subjected to the following conditions:
- within 1 year for full-time and within 2 years for part-time candidates;
- having shown competency and capability in conducting research at doctoral level through rigorous internal evaluation by the Senate; and
- approval of the Senate.
Note: 1-year work experience is equivalent to 0.05 CGPA
