Biography
Rosalina Abdul Salam is a Professor of Computer Science at the Faculty of Science & Technology, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) and is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Science & Technology. She was born in Air Itam Penang in January 1968 and received her first formal education at Sekolah Inggeris Air Itam from 1975 to 1980. After finishing primary school, she went to Sekolah Menengah Sains Pulau Pinang from 1981 to 1985. She then completed her two years A-level in 1988 at Sekolah Tun Fatimah, Johor Baharu.
She started her career as a Database Programmer at Barnsley College, United Kingdom and in 1992 as a System Analyst at Intel Penang after finishing her BSc. (Hons) degree in Computing from Leeds Beckett University (LBU), formerly known as Leeds Metropolitan University (LMU), United Kingdom. She later returned to the United Kingdom and obtained her MSc. in Engineering in Advanced Software Engineering from Sheffield University in 1997. In 2001, she received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Hull. In the same year, she became a lecturer at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), a senior lecturer in 2005 and an Associate Professor in 2007. She then became a Computer Science professor at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) in 2010.
As time went by, her career flourished. She served as a chairperson for the Software Engineering programme at the School of Computer Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM); Head of the Diploma Programme at Stamford College (USM Franchise Programme); Computer Science Mixed-mode Programme Coordinator, USM; Director of the Research Management Centre, USIM; Chairman of Faculty Research Committee (USIM); Director of Islamic Science Institute, USIM; and Chairman of Academic Promotions Committee, USIM.
At the national level, she was appointed as a Deputy Chairman of the Science and Mathematics Deans Council (MDSM) by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) in 2021. Currently, she is the Chairman of MDSM. In addition, she is also a member of several committees under MOHE, i.e. Research University Committee (JKRU), the Evaluation Panel of Rating of Higher Education Institutions (SETARA), an Evaluation panel of Malaysian Research Assessment (MyRA) and the Evaluation Committee of Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE).
Since she is an avid researcher herself, she has a proficient knowledge of how to research. Thus, she has also been appointed as the Evaluation Panel for research grants, Malaysia-France Bilateral Research Collaboration, Fundamental Research Grants Scheme (FRGS), Hubert Curien Partnership (PHC-Hibiscus) and Knowledge Transfer Programme (KTP). Her current research interests include Artificial Intelligence (AI), Image and Video Processing, Speech Processing, Pattern Recognition and Interactive Digital Media Applications in Education.
As part of her responsibility to impart knowledge, she has presented more than 40 talks as keynote and invited speakers, participated in exhibitions and received awards at the international and national levels. In addition, she has published more than 100 papers in journals and conferences, supervised several numbers of Ph.D. and Master’s theses and managed to secure more than 20 research grants. Other activities that she has been involved in at international and national levels are as a visiting professor, assessor and reviewer for academic programmes and promotions, external examiner for Ph.D. and Master’s theses, journal paper and book reviewer, as well as judging committee for innovations exhibitions and competitions.
The core business of a lecturer is educating and motivating students. Hence, she is actively involved in student activities and programmes to enhance their soft and business skills that could elevate their competency. She also devoted her time to look into problems and issues, providing support and motivation for student development and enhancing their leadership skills.
